What Is SEPA Instant and How Is It Faster Than Regular SEPA
SEPA Instant settles in under 10 seconds, 24/7/365 - regular SEPA can take a full business day. Here's the difference.

Choosing how to send money depends on where the payment is going, which currency is being used, and how quickly the recipient needs access to the funds. A euro payment to a supplier in France, for example, can follow a very different process from a US dollar payment to a company in the United States.
For businesses making euro payments within the SEPA area, the distinction between regular SEPA transfers and SEPA Instant is especially important. Both use the SEPA framework, but SEPA Instant is designed to make eligible funds available to the recipient within seconds, around the clock.
What Is SEPA Instant?
SEPA stands for Single Euro Payments Area. SEPA Instant, formally known as SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst), is a payment scheme that enables eligible euro credit transfers to make funds available on the recipient's account within ten seconds, 24 hours a day, every calendar day of the year.
SEPA Instant is not a separate currency or a different type of bank account. It is an instant-payment scheme operating within the broader SEPA framework.
The European Payments Council (EPC) manages the SCT Inst payment scheme and publishes its rulebook. The broader SEPA framework is based on European Union legislation, including Regulation (EU) No 260/2012, commonly known as the SEPA Regulation. Regulation (EU) 2024/886, the EU Instant Payments Regulation, amended that framework to introduce additional requirements for instant euro credit transfers, including pricing rules, payee verification, and phased participation requirements.
This distinction is important: the EPC manages the payment scheme rules, while EU legislation establishes binding requirements for payment service providers within its scope.
How SEPA Instant Works
A SEPA payment for a business can cover supplier invoices, salaries, contractor payments, customer refunds, and transfers between European business accounts.
A typical SEPA Instant payment follows these steps:
- The payer enters the recipient's IBAN and other required payment details.
- The payment service provider checks the payment and applies the relevant fraud, sanctions, and compliance controls.
- The payment instruction is processed through the SCT Inst scheme and associated clearing and settlement infrastructure.
- The recipient's payment service provider makes the funds available within the applicable ten-second timeframe.
- If the required confirmation is not received within ten seconds, the payer's payment account must generally be restored as if the instant transaction had not taken place, subject to the applicable rules.
SCT Inst uses ISO 20022-based messaging standards for communication between participating payment service providers.
The ten-second requirement refers to the processing of the instant credit transfer, not necessarily every step surrounding the transaction. A user may still experience additional time because of authentication, fraud-prevention procedures, or technical issues before the payment order is actually submitted.
SEPA Instant vs Regular SEPA
| Factor | SEPA Instant | Regular SEPA |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Funds available within 10 seconds under SCT Inst rules | Standard processing timetable |
| Availability | 24/7/365, subject to permitted maintenance periods | Depends on the payment scheme and provider |
| Currency | EUR | EUR |
| Pricing | Cannot exceed the comparable regular credit-transfer charge where EU rules apply | Standard provider pricing |
| Scheme | SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) | SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) |
| Best for | Time-sensitive euro payments | Routine euro payments |
The main difference is therefore processing speed and availability, rather than currency or geographic scope. Both schemes are designed for euro credit transfers within the SEPA framework.
Why Is SEPA Instant Faster?
The key advantage of SEPA Instant is that it is built for continuous, near-real-time processing rather than relying on conventional processing schedules.
A regular SEPA Credit Transfer can be processed according to the participating banks' standard schedules, which may involve cut-off times, processing windows, weekends, or holidays.
SCT Inst is designed to operate continuously. When the relevant payment service providers and infrastructure are available, an eligible payment can be processed at any time, including weekends and public holidays.
This is why SEPA vs SWIFT transfer times are not a direct comparison. SEPA Instant is specifically designed for immediate euro payments, whereas the timing of a SWIFT-based payment depends on the banks, correspondent relationships, currencies, local clearing systems, and compliance processes involved.
Availability: Can You Send SEPA Instant 24/7?
Yes. The SCT Inst scheme is designed to operate 24/7/365. Payment service providers can, however, have short and foreseeable periods of planned unavailability for maintenance or technical downtime.
The regulatory rollout has also made instant euro payments increasingly widespread. For payment service providers located in euro-area Member States and covered by the regulation, receiving instant euro credit transfers became mandatory from January 9, 2025, while sending instant euro credit transfers became mandatory from October 9, 2025. Different implementation dates apply to providers in non-euro Member States and to certain electronic money and payment institutions.
As a result, businesses should not assume that every financial institution offers exactly the same instant-payment functionality simply because it operates within the SEPA geographical area.
Are There Limits on SEPA Instant Transfers?
There is no maximum transaction amount at the SCT Inst scheme level. Payment service providers can nevertheless establish their own transaction or daily limits. Customers can also be given the ability to set or modify an individual maximum amount for instant transfers.
This means that a business may be able to send a high-value SEPA Instant payment in principle, while its particular bank or payment provider may impose a lower operational limit.
For larger corporate payments, checking the provider's transaction limits before initiating the transfer is therefore important.
Who Can Use SEPA Instant?
SEPA Instant can be used by individuals and businesses whose payment service providers support the SCT Inst scheme and whose transactions meet the applicable requirements.
The payment itself must be an eligible euro credit transfer, and the relevant payment service providers must be able to send and receive instant payments.
The regulatory requirements are being introduced in phases depending on the provider's type and location. In addition to the instant-payment obligations, the EU Instant Payments Regulation introduced verification of the payee, requiring covered payment service providers to offer a service that checks whether the recipient information corresponds to the payment account details before the payer authorizes the transfer.
For businesses, this additional verification can help reduce the risk of sending a payment to the wrong beneficiary.
How Much Does SEPA Instant Cost?
Under the EU Instant Payments Regulation, charges for sending and receiving instant euro credit transfers cannot be higher than the charges applied by the same payment service provider to comparable regular credit transfers, subject to the regulation's scope and implementation timetable.
Therefore, SEPA Instant is not necessarily a premium service simply because it is faster.
The actual cost can still depend on the account agreement and provider. Businesses should also distinguish between the transfer fee and other potential costs, such as currency conversion. A SEPA Instant payment itself is denominated in EUR, so converting funds into or out of euros can create a separate cost.
How to Send a SEPA Instant Payment
To make a SEPA Instant payment:
- Choose a bank or payment provider that supports SCT Inst.
- Enter the recipient's IBAN and required payment details.
- Review any payee-verification result provided by the payment provider.
- Confirm the amount and authorize the payment.
- If the transaction is eligible and the relevant providers are available, the funds should be made available to the recipient within the SCT Inst ten-second timeframe.
If you need a business payment account, ABF Pay lets you open one and review the available payment options.
SEPA Instant vs SWIFT: Which Should a Business Use?
For eligible euro payments within the SEPA framework, SEPA Instant is generally the more appropriate option when the recipient needs the funds quickly.
SWIFT serves a different purpose. It is a member-owned cooperative that provides secure financial messaging services to financial institutions and is not itself a payment or settlement system. Because of its systemic importance, SWIFT is subject to cooperative oversight by the G-10 central banks, with the National Bank of Belgium acting as the lead overseer.
A SWIFT-based payment may therefore be necessary when the transaction involves a non-euro currency, a destination outside the SEPA framework, or a payment route that requires correspondent banking.
The choice is ultimately determined by the transaction's currency, destination, participating financial institutions, and required delivery time.
